The Swedish Pilates Studio

Based in Glen Iris, the Swedish Pilates Studio provides Reformer Pilates classes and Mat Pilates classes led by Birgitta Thorborg. Mat Pilates classes focus on core strength, balance and posture, making them suitable for everyone, especially beginners. Some "advanced" sessions use resistance bands, the Swiss ball, and circle. Reformer Pilates classes use a "Reformer Bed". These pilates sessions use resistance training to build and enhance strength, core stability and flexibility. Our Online Pilates Sessions are available for remote clients, allowing the same high-quality instruction and personal guidances as our in-studio classes. Birgitta provides personalized guidance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit from each session.

Updated Review It is my one year anniversary of attending Birgitta's Mat Pilates sessions - after the on the introductory "Mats Pilates" assessment and I wanted to add to my initial review (see below) As a result of reasonably consistent attendance of 3 times a week, I have noticed a substantial difference in my posture, balance and overall core strength. My balance on one leg, eyes closed etc is far better , and the resistance band and plank is now my friends. Highly recommend Pilates to anyone, especially seniors who want to be more mobile. Initial Review Birgitta is super enthusiastic, and takes great interest in everyone in the class, taking their individual capabilities and needs into consideration after a good one-on-one discussion. Due to various injuries I had stopped doing much physical activity, that wasn't good for my own well-being or my recuperating injuries either, I needed something challenging enough to have a decent workout but also safe to not put a strain and get in the way of healing. With pilates I found the ideal solution, with Brigitta it made it perfect. She takes into account any issues you might have and takes care that you work but that you don't harm yourself, in her sessions you can be sure that you'll push your body to improve in a safe environnement. To be honest before going to the studio I hadn't really accepted that pilates is something that anyone can do and still get properly fit, people of all ages and fitness are doing great work in class. After one session I was sold, I discovered a training that works with all my body, helps with my daily posture and has improved my health and strength. If you are here reading reviews because you are hesitating, I would encourage you to go round and sign up for a trial period, I am sure you'll continue going back. ~ Raquel

We offer Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates classes. We also have online Pilates classes that run in conjunction with the studio classes

Yes, we offer online Pilates sessions for remote clients, providing the same high-quality instruction and personal guidance as our in-studio classes. We broadcast our classes via Zoom, so you can join from the comfort of your home. This allows you to participate in our instructor-led sessions no matter where you are.
Are there Age Limits for Pilates?
There are no strict age limits for practicing Pilates; it can be adapted for all age groups and classes. Our classes are typically attended by men and women of all ages and abilities, where exercises are tailored to suit individuals and ensure safety and effectiveness for everyone. Our individual assessment session will help determine the most suitable approach for newcomers
Can Pilates help with back pain?
